Description
During situations in which patients or their parents are perturbed and much worried, counsellors play an active role in dispelling their apprehensions and making them to give consent for an indispensable surgery.

One such instance is the case of a boy named Ajay. Two months back he was brought by his mother to Aravind-Tirunelveli with injury in the left eye. How it happened?

Just like other lads of his age group, he was also indulging in childish acts and doing mischiefs. One day while watering garden plants, he was juggling with the hose pipe which accidentally hit one of his eyes. This caused pain and reddishness in the eye.

Ajay was examined by Aravind doctor. The boy had sustained retinal nerves detachment and it needed immediate surgery. Otherwise the left eye may lose its vision, Ajay's mother was told.

Both the boy and his mother were sent for counselling. The counsellor explained to them in detail what had happened to the retinal nerves. She told them that the detached nerves will be re-attached during the surgery which would take 2 to 3 hours. And the surgery would be performed under anesthesia. But we can not say for certain that 100 vision would be restored after surgery. The counsellor said.

Since the operation would take such a long time to be completed and there was also no guarantee of 100% restoration of sight, Ajay's mother got perturbed and refused to give consent for surgery.

Then the counsellor further explained that Ajay's injured eye had a vision of only four feet distance (4/60); if immediately operated upon there is a possibility of gaining more vision in that eye. Otherwise it may result in complete loss of sight. Now the future of your son is in your hands. So, please think it over for sometime and decide - the mother was advised.

Ten minutes later, Ajay's father telephoned. He was also given the same counselling. Both the parents discussed for a while and gave consent for surgery.

However, the mother wanted to meet the Chief Medical Officer who also stressed the need for operation. Finally, Ajay was admitted in the hospital. Dr. Sandeep Asir successfully performed the surgery on the next day.

Two days later, the boy was discharged from hospital. When he came back for followup examination after 3 weeks, his affected eye was found to have gained increased vision (6/36). The condition of eye was good and he was advised to return after one month for another re-examination.

Accordingly when Ajay was back in the hospital, his eye sight was further improved to the extent of 6/18. He was allowed to attend school and play as usual. But should be careful as to not get any injury again, doctor cautioned.

The mother profusely thanked the doctor and Aravind for having restored vision in her son's injured eye.
